Newborn Session

Prep Guide

HI

Congratulations on the arrival of your precious baby! I am sure you were waiting for the

moment to hold him/her for so long and lots of emotions are filling you up. Let me just tell you how excited I am to be the one to document this beautiful milestone of your new family that will forever preserve this great milestone of your life. It doesn’t matter if its your first or fifth I and sure this precious baby is very special.

We both want this session to go as smooth as possible, and have a great outcome, let me give you some tips, that have worked before, on how to prepare best for your newborn session. Newborn sessions are best done in the first 14 days of baby’s life. Usually we schedule around 6th-14th day but on occasion we can schedule up to 4 week mark. I do realize that so early you don’t have a set schedule yet, and also trying to navigate the whole parenting thing. Session can take anywhere from one to tree hours depending on the baby. Taking breaks for feedings and changing is absolutely normal and necessary. Please don’t feel guilty if your baby takes too long to eat, we know that its all new for both of you.

try to feed the baby right before the session. We want a full belly. If you are bottle/formula feeding have some extras with you ( more than one) also please bring a pacifier, even if you don't plan on using it, just the the time of the session it is a great tool to help baby feel calm and relaxed. I do have some new pacifiers in the studio if you forget.

Not all baby’s are natural sleepers, and your baby might not sleep at all, as a matter of fact your little one could be awake the whole session. Do not panic, it will not prevent me from creating beautiful portraits. Calm and relaxing atmosphere is a key to a successful session.

have them wear a lose clothes, zip up onesies are a great choice. In a winter/colder months i know it is best to bundle and layer, we will work with that with no issue

for the in-home session a zip up PJ or just a diaper would be very helpful.

this is to prevent any markings on baby's delicate skin.

Temperature:

Studio session: studio will be very warm, to provide the most comfort for the baby. So make sure to dress in layers that you can take off if needs for comfort.

Home session: please turn up your heater to 80F or if it is summer time, turn off your AC, we want to make sure baby is comfortable and asleep, warmth helps them relax and be in a deeper sleep, since there is a lot of movements during the sessio.

Siblings

it is not easy to predict how your older child will behave. I have seen many different cases of both sides. And its Ok! I will do my best to get older brother/sister to cooperate, please do not stress about it as children pick up easy on the parents moods and tend to reflect it. Please let me know in advance what your child is into, character, hobbies, cartoons etc. it will help me to connect with him/her and possibly make the session a bit easier. I am not going to lie, a lot of times bribery is the only thing that would work, and its ok. As I said before do not stress about it, I will use different methods to try and engage with him/her and I am sure we will be successful.

Parents

Dear mommy, I know you are tired and probably sleep deprived. Most likely still uncomfortable and figuring everything out as you go. Please, and I will tell you this again, let me know if any posing makes you uncomfortable, or you need to sit down, I usually advise my client to wear some simple, calm and neutral colors. try to avoid bright colors and big logos. Same goes for your significant other. Family portraits are usually done first and from the waist up.

Also very important! If you are breastfeeding please avoid any spicy foods, gassy food and any new foods(something you haven't tried during breastfeeding yet) Try to stick with a comfort foods it will help calm baby’s tummy and avoid any surprise colics. Below is a suggestion list of what foods to avoid before the session.
